Finding your soul mate can be difficult, especially when there’s more than one of them. Carey (Adelaide Clemens), a high school music teacher who is married to Simon (Patrick J. Adams), learns this the hard way when she meets Owen (Douglas Smith).

Alongside Clemens, Adams, and Smith in the cast of The Swearing Jar are Kathleen Turner, David Hewlett, Jade Ma, Mary Grant, Athena Park, and more. Kate Hewlett wrote the film, adapting it from her stageplay, and it’s directed by Lindsay MacKay. The emotional drama is set to release on September 23 in theaters and on demand, following its recent world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Ahead of its wider release, we have an exclusive clip to premiere which provides a sneak peek into Turner’s character, Bev. “I hope you weren’t smoking on the lawn,” says Simon as he and Carey open the door to their house. Bev stands on the other side, holding an unlit cigarette. “I wasn’t smoking, I was quitting,” she replies. “With a cigarette in your mouth?” he asks. “It’s unlit, and it’s menthol,” she retorts, “this is phase two.” According to Bev, phase one was switching to menthols. The official synopsis reads: “It is a rare and miraculous thing to find your one true soul mate. Carey soon learns that finding two of them can pose an even greater problem. Equal parts humor and heartbreak, The Swearing Jar tells two love stories at once, exploring the challenges of marriage, parenting, loss, and moving on.”

“This is really a film about the past and present, and how those two things intertwine in all sorts of ways. The story comes together slowly, like puzzle pieces. With each piece, we understand our characters a little more and are drawn a little deeper into their story,” commented MacKay in an interview with Women and Hollywood.

The official trailer for The Swearing Jar was released on September 15 and gives us a bit more insight into the characters in the film, as we can see Carey is a singer/songwriter, with her music playing over it. She and Simon are expecting a baby together when she meets Owen in a bookstore. He’s also a singer/songwriter. “Secrets… secrets kill a marriage,” says Bev. Cue more conflicting voice-overs from the cast and viewers can surely expect the emotional drama to unfold.
