Netflix will very soon release the final episodes of Grace and Frankie, wrapping up the hit series with a run of seven seasons at the end of the month. The release of the final episodes will officially have Grace and Frankie set the record for the longest-running Netflix original series. Given how Netflix seems to have a reputation for axing so many shows after one or two seasons, it’s all the more remarkable that Grace and Frankie made it to seven.

In a new exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Grace and Frankie cinematographer Luke Miller spoke about what it was like to work on the show. In regard to this upcoming series finale, Miller touched on the great pressure in coming up with an ending that will satisfy the fans who’d spent years investing in the characters and storylines. Look no further than what happened with Game of Thrones for an example of fans rejecting an ending to a once-beloved series. For Grace and Frankie, however, Miller found himself “grinning ear to ear” while crafting the final episode and hopes that the viewers will feel the same way when they watch it.

“I think ending a series that is near and dear to people’s hearts is one of the most difficult tasks in television writing. I think our writers, led by Marta Kauffman and Howard Morris, did a fantastic job with the series finale. As someone who’s been a part of every episode along the way, I’m very personally invested in the show and its characters, and I found myself grinning ear to ear at every step of the way while we filmed the finale. From the table read to the last day of shooting, everything just felt right in line with the rest of the series, comforting, like your favorite warm blanket.”

Luke Miller also addressed the show’s rise in popularity, feeling that the writing started out great and just got better and better with each season. While Miller felt that the Grace and Frankie team had a hit on their hands from the start with the attached cast, it was still a surprise for the cinematographer to see Netflix spending so many years with the series. The thinking is that it would perhaps last a few seasons, so going the distance with seven left everyone feeling happy.

The final episodes of Grace and Frankie will start streaming on Netflix on April 29, 2022.

“When I first heard about the show, it was a bit difficult to wrap my head around it. At the time, there were only a few original streaming shows, and the idea of a cast with this much magnitude would all get together for an original comedy on Netflix was a complete shift in how I thought about streaming. Also, I had no idea it would end up running so long! When we started, Jane, Lily, Martin, and Sam were all in their 70s, and I thought we’d do a couple of seasons at most. Each year everyone kept coming back for more, and I’m so glad they did! This show has been a once in a career opportunity; to work for so long with such wonderful people is really an experience that will be very hard to top.”
