Academy Award winner Olivia Colman finds herself killing time while trekking across Ireland in this exclusive clip from the upcoming coming-of-age comedy, Joyride. Walking alongside newcomer Charlie Reid, this mismatched pair attempt to play games as they walk a lonely road in the hopes of discovering some semblance of freedom from their respective responsibilities and hardships. You can check out the new clip from Joyride below.
Directed by Emer Reynolds from a screenplay by Ailbhe Keogan, Joyride follows 12-year-old Mully (Charlie Reid), who, after fleeing his father, steals a taxi and is shocked to find a woman, Joy (Olivia Colman), in the back seat with a baby. Joy has her own share of problems, and has decided to give her child away to a friend. Mully meanwhile needs to quickly create some distance between himself and his debt-ridden dad, who’s after the cash Mully has taken with him.

And so, two lovable rogues, a complicated middle-aged mother and a troubled adolescent, head off on a journey across Ireland, gradually finding in each other the friendship, love, and learning they never knew they needed.
Led by Colman, Joyride will no doubt boast another show-stealing performance from the hugely talented actress. Best known for her roles in the likes of The Father, Murder on the Orient Express, The Lost Daughter, The Lobster, Empire of Light, and The Favourite (for which she was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress) on the big screen, as well as The Crown, Broadchurch, Peep Show, Fleabag, and Heartstopper on the small screen, Joyride should give Colman ample opportunity to once again demonstrate her comedic chops.
Olivia Colman Prefers Not to Do Rehearsals
Magnolia Pictures
The cast and crew behind Joyride were surprised to learn that Colman does not like to do rehearsals, with director Emer Reynolds revealing exclusively to MovieWeb that the award-winning actress prefers instead to be “in the moment.” Which the filmmaker discovered leads to a more “organic” and much more “vivid” performance.
“It was a little surprise to me that she doesn’t like to do rehearsals,” Reynolds said. “I get that now when I see her, because she’s so immediate, she wants it to be live in the moment, with real responses. So our rehearsal periods, as such, was really just us getting to know each other, chatting a little, feeling stuff out.” Reynolds, who has only directed documentaries (after an extensive career in film editing), is actually the exact type of director to make something like this work even better than one would imagine. After all, most documentaries aren’t rehearsed, and you don’t get multiple takes with the truth. “I approached it the same way as I do documentaries — you’re trying to get the heart to it, you’re trying to get the truth.”
Joyride is scheduled to be released in theaters and on demand by Magnolia Pictures in the United States on December 23, 2022.
