In a recent interview with Movieweb, Tom Hughes discussed working with Russell Owen on their new film Shepherd. Hughes plays Eric Black in the film, a widowed man who moves to a desolate island in Scotland to work as a shepherd and escape his past. As the story unwinds, more is discovered about Black’s past and the death of his wife. Shepherd is a horror-thriller directed by Owen, and Hughes turns in a remarkable performance. It will be in Theaters on May 6 and available On Demand and Digital on May 10.

During the interview, Hughes gave us some insight as to how he approached the role.

“I think I lean towards the Chekhovian school of ideology. I wouldn’t say that I necessarily reach for my own experience… because for me, it’s something more rhythmical, more kinetic. I’m trying to show you that person’s vibration as opposed to my own… It’s still my body, it’s my frame, it’s my energy telling the stories on some level… but I was just trying to immerse myself as much as I could and live in the rhythm of Eric… and as much of a vessel for that to feel as complex, and hopefully as honest as it deserves to feel.” Explained Hughes. “I think that’s what hopefully is the thing that will really connect with people.”

Fans can recognize Hughes from many previous roles including playing Prince Albert in the British television series Victoria. He’s also featured in the Burberry’s Summer collection with Emma Watson.

Owen commented, “He’s very famous for playing Prince Albert… and I started to look at a bit more of his portfolio, and he comes from not far from me just on the border in north Wales from where I grew up… And luckily for me, he was available and agreed to do it, and we didn’t look back. He’s got exactly the right presence that I was after.”

Owen was sure to give credit to Gemma Sykes, the casting director for the film. Sykes has worked on other projects like Captain Phillips, Jason Bourne, Devs, and much more.

Shepherd is a Saban Films production.
