The Lord of the Rings is a franchise that has spanned over the last six decades. Comprising three parts: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, the novels by J.R.R Tolkien were published during the 1950s and were eventually adapted into three films by Peter Jackson, each of which won numerous awards. This eventually led to the adaptation of Tolkien’s prequel novel The Hobbit into a set of films as well, though they were not as acclaimed as original The Lord of the Rings adaptations.

What is the Second Age?

Much like any franchise, The Lord of the Rings has a great deal of lore that reaches much farther than The Shire and the Elven language. J.R.R. Tolkien’s lore runs deep and, much like real life history, there are a variety of ages that begin and end with massive events. The Second Age begins after the War of Wrath, the biggest war in all of Middle-earth, bringing an end to The First Age. The War of Wrath was a massive battle involving almost every species that inhabits Middle-earth led by lesser god Valar pitted against Dark Lord Morgoth, the greatest of the lesser gods that watch over Middle-earth. At the end of the war, Morgoth was imprisoned in the “Void” where he could harm no-one. The mass-destruction and devastation brought on by the War literally reshaped the landscape, flooding parts of the map while Elves secluded themselves away from the mainland of Middle-earth. The Second Age spans 3500 years and ends with the War of the Last Alliance in which Isildur defeats Sauron by cutting off the finger that held the One ring.

Is The Rings of Power Set in the Second Age?

Will Sauron Be in The Rings of Power?

     New Line Cinema

The One Ring is the main source of Sauron’s power and is the cause of a great deal of trouble throughout the franchise. While the title of the series may suggest that Sauron and his ring may make an appearance in the series, it’s been confirmed that Sauron AKA Annatar will not make an appearance in Season One. This may come as a shock to many, seeing as the main antagonist is the source of a great deal of suffering, caused by his ring of power. While Sauron may not be making an appearance, we can expect to see some familiar faces, including Galadriel, Elrond and even Isildur who eventually is responsible for Sauron’s initial defeat, separating the man from his ring.
