The last year seemed to have made it impossible for Ezra Miller to continue their journey as the DCU’s Barry Allen aka The Flash. With numerous arrests and unsettling off screen behavior, Miller seemed to have sealed their own fate, and the many delays of the movie seemed to be holding off the inevitable shutting down of Miller’s Flash appearances in any future entries in the franchise. However, since then, the DCEU as was has been mostly disbanded, and many assumed that would automatically see Miller join Henry Cavill and others as a piece of DC history. It seems though, that may not be the case and James Gunn could be dragging Miller into the new iteration of the DCU.

Following their several high-profile arrests for violent and threatening behavior, Miller returned to film new scenes for The Flash, and subsequently underwent mental health treatment and apologized for their misdemeanors. Now, following this and the belief that The Flash is going to be one of the best movies of the old DC regime, Variety reported that Warner Bros. are “amenable to continuing with the actor” for new projects. So far, there have been no direct corroborations of this, but that will clearly come in good time if it turns out to be the case.

The Flash Could Be A Pivotal Point In The DCU’s Transition

The Flash was originally announced as a potential solo project within the DCU way back in 2014. While the film had to sit in line behind many other Justice League related pictures, it seemed like everything was in place for Ezra Miller’s big moment to come until the Covid pandemic saw production delays impact the release date of the movie. With Miller’s behavior also reportedly leading to the film’s release being pushed back again to this summer.

For over a year, there have been rumors that The Flash would become some kind of soft-reboot of the beleaguered DC franchise, and appeared to be leading to a long-term return for Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne/Batman at one point. However, all of that was before the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc. which resulted in one of the messiest and most disruptive realignments of a franchise seen in recent years.

Now, the DCU’s future is in a strange kind of limbo. James Gunn and Peter Safran are now heading up DC Studios and are currently sitting on a whole slate of new DC based TV shows and movies. While that is going on behind the scenes, up front is a list of potential blockbuster DC movies from the old franchise that now seem to have no real place in the world other than as a previously committed to coda of the Snyderverse.

How movies like The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will perform at the box office is something that we will find out later this year when the movies, along with Shazam: Fury of the Gods and Blue Beetle, arrive in theaters.
