Legendary action movie filmmaker John Woo has begun filming on his next feature, Silent Night, an action flick that will have absolutely no dialogue whatsoever. Woo took to social media to announce that filming on Silent Night has begun, posting a, it must be said, pretty peaceful-looking image considering the action pedigree of the director alongside the caption “First day of shooting SILENT NIGHT, starring @joelkinnaman.”

Silent Night will be led by Run All Night and The Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman, who plays a normal, regular, everyday father who is dragged into the criminal underworld when he embarks on a revenge mission following the death of his son. While the plot sounds like typical action movie fare and should be perfect for both John Woo and Joel Kinnaman, the real hook of Silent Night is the fact that it will feature no dialogue. None.

But, considering that synopsis, Silent Night is unlikely to be anything but silent. With John Woo no doubt using the sounds of bullets firing and fists breaking faces to tell the story instead.

Silent Night marks John Woo’s return to Hollywood following an absence of almost two decades. His last venture was the action outing Paycheck starring Ben Affleck and Uma Thurman. Based on the Phillip K. Dick short story, Paycheck follows Affleck as Michael, a reverse engineer, who suddenly finds himself pursued on charges of murder and treason. Suffering from amnesia, he is forced to piece together his past while on the run. The movie was sadly met with negative reviews upon release, and John Woo has not made a Hollywood project since.

Instead, the Hong Kong filmmaker has focussed on projects across the pond, including the likes of Red Cliff: Part I, Red Cliff: Part II, Reign of Assassins, The Crossing, The Crossing 2, and Manhunt. Woo though is best known for helming such superb action flicks as Face/Off, Mission: Impossible 2, The Killer, Bullet in the Head, and Hard Boiled.

If John Woo’s return was not already enough to have you excited for Silent Night, four producers with ties to the John Wick franchise are also on board, including Basil Iwanyk (Sicario), Christian Mercuri (Out of the Furnace), Erica Lee (The Informer), and Lori Tilkin (Red Cliff).

RoboCop Star Joel Kinnaman Will Embark on a Vendetta in Silent Night

     Warner Bros. Pictures

The Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman is currently the only actor to have been announced for Silent Night. Kinnaman will take the lead as the regular father on a vendetta, with the actor known for starring roles in the likes of the 2014 RoboCop reboot; Run All Night in which he starred alongside aged action man Liam Neeson; director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad; crime thriller The Informer; and most recently director James Gunn’s DC reboot-slash-sequel, The Suicide Squad, in which Kinnaman reprised the role of Rick Flag.

Silent Night does not yet have a release date scheduled but is sure to very quickly rise up the “must-see” lists of action movie fans everywhere.
