Every teenage has dreamed about having their own Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. A day when you can’t go to school because of the beautiful weather. A day when the town rallies around your supposed sickness, your sister helps you instead of ratting you out, you become the Sausage King of Chicago, and you sing a Beatles’ song on top of a parade float while your girlfriend and best friend discuss your future. This 1986 classic from icon John Hughes has shaped every young generation since its release, and has implemented the mindset of “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Matthew Broderick stars as the famed Ferris Bueller, with Alan Ruck as the heavily discussed real main character, Cameron Frye. At their side is Sloane Peterson, played by Mia Sara, and quite the bunch of well known actors that add to the comedy of this iconic movie. So, after Ferris makes it through every backyard on his block and into bed before his mother and father make it home, and he tells the audience to go home in the post credit scene, what is the cast up to today? Matthew Broderick

After his success in the 80s and 90s, making his name as a teen heartthrob and then dabbling in voice acting, voicing Adult Simba in Disney’s The Lion King, Matthew Broderick continued acting, but found his love for the stage. Since 2015, he has been in 10 shows, he most recent being the show Plaza Suite that first hit the stage in 2020, then continued this year after pandemic restrictions lifted. The show opened at the Boston Theater and is an on-Broadway show. He is still married to long-time partner Sarah Jessica Parker, and they live together with their three children.
Alan Ruck
After his portrayal of lovable Cameron Frye, the anxious, loyal best friend in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Alan Ruck went on to star in everything known to humankind. With 119 acting credits and counting, he has been in dramas, comedies, science fiction pieces, and romances. He has appeared in television shows such as Tales from the Crypt, Scrubs, Ghost Whisper, Psych, CSI, Hawaii Five-O, and even Sofia the First. After appearing in many single episodes, Ruck landed the leading role in the ongoing HBO show Succession, about the Roy family and their entertainment business. Ruck found his niche in television and continues to appear in shows even as he stars on Succession.
Mia Sara
As Sloane Peterson, one of the coolest 80s girlfriends with a perfect energy to match Ferris Bueller, Mia Sara was the “it girl” of the 80s. She went on to continue acting, but, per Looper, ultimately disliked it and felt unhappy in her career. After having two children and marrying Brian Henson, the eldest son of Jim Henson, she stopped acting and became a different kind of artist. Today, she is a writer with many published works of fiction and poetry.
Jennifer Grey
With her big break playing the infamous Jennifer Bueller, Jennifer Grey went on to play the even more infamous Frances “Baby” Houseman in Dirty Dancing. a 80s classic. Grey has acted in both movies and television, and even has starred on a season of Dancing With The Stars, putting her dance training to use once more. Per Variety, she is currently working hard on trying to get a Dirty Dancing sequel out, and according to IMDb, there is an untitled Dirty Dancing project set to come out in 2024.
Edie McClurg
Known for playing the hilarious school secretary, Edie McClurg has been a large influence in the world of voice acting. She has credits in many Disney films such as A Bug’s Life, Home on the Range, Cars, Wreck-It Ralph, and Frozen. She has also lent her voice to classic like Totally Spies!, and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. She unfortunately developed onset dementia in recent years, but still continues to voice act when she is able to.
