While it’s not uncommon for actors to try their hand at directing and writing movies, they don’t always do so at a young age. Finn Wolfhard, known for starring in Stranger Things, It, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, is set to co-direct and co-write Hell of a Summer alongside fellow young actor Billy Bryk. Wolfhard spoke with Collider about the movie, shedding some light on his directorial debut:

It’s clear that Wolfhard’s upcoming film has been inspired by classic slashers such as Friday the 13th, but instead has a comedic twist, in the vein of Zombieland and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. Filming has wrapped, and as Wolfhard and the team edit the film, he says that they’ll likely initially screen the movie for a festival and then go from there. Billy Bryk previously acted alongside Wolfhard in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

“It’s a comedy slasher film that’s set at a summer camp. It takes place at counselors’ weekend before the campers get there. All the counselors are getting the camp ready and people start getting murdered. It’s this kind of ensemble camp comedy with blood in it. I co-wrote and co-directed it with Billy Bryk. We’re in the middle of editing it now. Hopefully, someone wants to put it out. That’d be awesome.”

     A24

While primarily known for acting in horror films and spooky-themed adventures, Wolfhard has since branched out. He starred in When You Finish Saving the World, a touching family drama about a mother trying to reconnect with her son. Produced by A24, it marks Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut and received warm receptions when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It will receive a wider release on January 20th, 2023.

Another A24 film Wolfhard will appear in is The Legend of Ochi. While it’s still a ways off and details are being kept secret, it’s described as a ‘fantasy epic’ and other stars include Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, and Helena Zegel. The story follows a young girl named Zengel who learns to communicate with animals, including a mysterious and rare species called the Ochi.

Hell of a Summer is written and directed by Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk, both of whom will also star in the film. Fred Hechinger, Michael Costigan, Jason Bateman, and Jay Van Hoy will serve as producers. The cast includes D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Abby Quinn, and Pardis Saremi. A release date has not been confirmed yet.
