As Christmas is around the corner, many pop culture geeks get it early, with Brazil’s Comic-Con popping off with a bang. After two years online because of the coronavirus pandemic, CCXP has finally returned in person in beautiful São Paulo. With numbers boosted, CCXP is up there with the American Comic-Cons of New York and, of course, L.A. And just like any of these significant comic conventions, we fans get news, trailers, and teasers from our favorite film studios from across the globe.

DC dropped a major poster today that fans have long awaited. Finally, the first official look at the Blue Beetle poster arrived, with a shiny new look and popping colors. The poster, released courtesy of DC Comics Twitter, can be found below.

DC has been making waves recently with their new movie Black Adam and the sequel to Shazam!, titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods. DC now wants to introduce everyone to a new face for the first time on the big screen. His name is Blue Beetle.

For those unaware of this character, Blue Beetle follows teenage Jamie Reyes, who gets a bizarre alien scarab beetle attached to him. Because of the beetle, he is given other-worldly powers such as superhuman speed and strength and impressive Blue Beetle armor. At the comic convention, everyone was given their first look at the poster. It shows the scarab beetle itself with beautiful blues and pinks to its alien appearance.

Xolo Maridueña, best known for his role in Cobra Kai, will portray the teenage hero. Blue Beetle will face off against enemy Victoria Kord played by the award-winning actress Susan Sarandon. Others in this movie include Belissa Escodobo (Hocus Pocus 2) as Jamie’s sister Milagros Reyes. Bruna Marquezine, a Brazilian star, will be Jamie’s love interest named Penny. Well-known comedian and actor George Lopez will be Jamie’s uncle Rudy. Finally, to round out the cast is Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.) as villain Carapax the Indestructible Man, and Harvey Guillén of What We Do in the Shadows has an undisclosed role.

Blue Beetle was initially set to be released for streaming on HBO Max alongside the now-canned Batgirl movie. But, in the final months of 2021, Warner Bros. decided to push the film to 2023 for a theatrical release, possibly saving it from cancelation.

Blue Beetle is directed by Angel Manual Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, making this the first Latino-led superhero film from a major studio. This is another great moment for inclusion, especially for Latino people. So, if you seek another superhero movie to add to your roster, save the date for Aug. 18, 2023!
