Netflix’s new vampire show First Kill is going to be a one-and-done series. Deadline reports that Netflix has officially pulled the plug on the teen drama series following the debut of its 8-episode first season in June. There will not be a second season put into development to close out the series, meaning the season one finale will also serve as the series finale.
Reportedly, First Kill had a fairly respectable run upon its debut. Perhaps many viewers were eager to check it out as it was described by many critics and journalists as a series that feels like a “successor” to The Vampire Diaries. First Kill was ultimately able to surpass 100 million streaming hours within its first 28 days of release. However, per Deadline, it appears that too many viewers were giving up on the series before making it to the end of the season, as it “did not meet thresholds for viewing and completion of episodes.”

First Kill was created by Victoria Schwab and is based on her original short story of the same name. The series primarily focuses on the complicated relationship between teenage vampire Juliette Fairmont (Sarah Catherine Hook) and monster hunter Calliope (Imani Lewis). Along with Hook and Lewis, the series stars Elizabeth Mitchell, Aubin Wise, Gracie Dzienny, Dominic Goodman, Phillip Mullings, Jr., and Jason R. Moore.
First Kill Featured a Diverse Cast

Also sometimes referred to as “the gay Twilight” in addition to being called “the next Vampire Diaries,” First Kill had drawn some praise for its representation. The show’s lead stars have spoken about this diversity and how “honored” they felt to be a part of a show that recognizes this. They also described how their goal was to normalize on-screen queer relationships.
“The representation in this show is phenomenal," series star Imani Lewis said of the show’s diverse cast in a previous interview, via Teen Vogue. “I think I speak for both of us: We’re just so honored to be able to be in a position to represent such incredible communities of people. It’s really awesome to see that kind of representation, and it feels so good on a personal level.”
“It’s really cool how Calliope and Juliette have parents who don’t question their sexuality," added co-star Sarah Catherine Hook. “They’re very accepting. That’s never a point of conflict for them in this story. And there are parents out there, thank God who are similar to Jack and Talia, Sebastian and Margot. But there are also still parents out there who kick their children out of their house for being queer. So I think it’s amazing that we are having this kind of story where it is normal, and it’s not necessarily… It’s not a coming-out story. We are just normalizing this queer relationship,”
There will not be a second season to look forward to, but you can find the first and only season of First Kill streaming on Netflix.
