It was recently announced that First Kill would not be getting a second season at Netflix and series showrunner Felicia D. Henderson as a theory about what went wrong. Premiering on the streaming platform in June, the show did fairly well upon its release, garnering more than 100 milling hours streamed by subscribers within its first 28 days. But overall viewership numbers fell short of expectations as it wasn’t the breakout hit that the streamer had been hoping for.
Speaking about the situation with the Daily Beast, Henderson says that the marketing is to blame for First Kill coming to an end just as quickly as it had arrived. The showrunner says that the marketing was “beautiful” at the start but that Netflix held back on teasing some of the show’s other compelling elements.

Henderson stresses that the series had “something for everyone,” which is why she wanted to take part in First Kill in the first place. That goes back to the suggestion that the limited marketing for First Kill did not adequately promote everything that the series had to offer, providing just a small tease without letting potential viewers know there could be something there that intrigues them.
First Kill’s Showrunner Praises the Cast Along With Its HIgh Viewership
Netflix
The news of the series getting axed was a bit shocking for Henderson. Praising the cast and their chemistry together, along with the high viewership brought in by the series soon after its premiere, Henderson was feeling pretty optimistic about a renewal.
Developed for television by Victoria Schwab and based on a short story of Schwab’s, First Kill tells the story of a teenage vampire who falls for a monster hunter. The series stars Sarah Catherine Hook, Imani Lewis, Elizabeth Mitchell, Aubin Wise, Gracie Dzienny, Dominic Goodman, Phillip Mullings, Jr., and Jason R. Moore. Reviews were fairly mixed, as the series has scored a 57% rating at Rotten Tomatoes when it comes to critics’ reviews, though it has a much higher audience score of 89% fresh.
You can find the first and only season of First Kill streaming on Netflix.
