A first look image has been shared showing Finn Wolfhard and Julianne Moore in When You Finish Saving The World, a comedy-drama from Jesse Eisenberg, which also serves as his directorial debut. The image features Wolfhard and Moore as a quirky mother and son duo who are donned in winter clothing. Wolfhard is wearing a beanie, coat, and backpack while Moore is wearing some wide-rimmed glasses. The two appear to be headed out somewhere, but it isn’t clear yet where that may be.

When You Finish Saving The World is based on the 2020 novel of the same title written by Jesse Eisenberg. The book tells the story of Nathan, Rachel, and their son Ziggy and plays around with time as we meet them at various different moments in their lives. The audiobook production of this novel was a big hit, winning an Audie Award for best original work in 2021. The audiobook also featured Wolfhard in the same role, along with Kaitlyn Dever as Rachel, and Eisenberg narrating.

The film adaptation appears to focus more on the relationship between Ziggy and his mother and will have some differences from the novel. Here is the synopsis shared by Sundance:

“From his bedroom home studio, high school student Ziggy performs original folk-rock songs for an adoring online fan base. This concept mystifies his formal and uptight mother, Evelyn, who runs a shelter for survivors of domestic abuse. While Ziggy is busy trying to impress his socially engaged classmate Lila by making his music less bubblegum and more political, Evelyn meets Angie and her teen son, Kyle, when they seek refuge at her facility. She observes a bond between the two that she’s missing with her own son, and decides to take Kyle under her wing against her better instincts.”

In addition to this being Eisenberg’s first credit as a director, it is also the first feature film production from Fruit Tree, a film and television production company led by academy-award-winning actress Emma Stone and her husband Dave McCary along with A24’s Ali Herting.

Stone and Eisenberg have a history of working with each other in the past including both of the Zombieland films. Wolfhard is coming off of a recent appearance in Ghostbusters: Afterlife while Moore’s last appearance was in Dear Evan Hansen.

When You Finish Saving The World doesn’t have a current theatrical release date, but it will have its worldwide premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 22, 2022.
