A Five Nights at Freddy’s movie has been in development for quite a while now, but finally, Blumhouse has officially announced the film is heading into production. Based on the popular horror games that sees players attempting to survive five nights in a creepy pizza shop where a bunch of haunted animatronic characters are stalking the halls with murder in mind, the movie adaptation has been discussed for the last seven years and seemed like one of those projects that was never going manage to make it to the finish line.

Five Nights at Freddy’s has spawned a number of game variants, and there have been plenty of ideas for a movie being discussed and abandoned over the last few years. Previous reports have suggested that a movie plotline would essentially delve into the usual horror trope of “teenagers stumbling upon abandoned building,” but this was dropped pretty much as soon as it was suggested. Another pitch included adapting the Five Nights at Freddy’s novel, Silver Eyes. Now it seems that Blumhouse has finally managed to nail down something workable for the franchise, as Jason Blum revealed. He said:

Five Nights at Freddy’s Will Bring in Jim Henson’s Creature Shop

According to details revealed about the movie, Five Nights at Freddy’s will stick pretty close to the lore of the original game, following a new security guard working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The film will be produced by Blum along with the game’s creator Scott Cawthon and will be directed by Emma Tammi. When it comes to the movie’s central terrifying animatronic characters, the Jim Henson Creature Workshop is on board to bring the movie’s villains to life, suggesting that the movie will be a very practical effects affair.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s is more consistently asked about than any other film I’ve ever worked on, and I’m thrilled to confirm it’s finally happening! With Emma Tammi at the helm, we’re committed to making Scott’s vision of the movie come to life. Rest assured, it will be and is worth the wait.”

Of course, Blumhouse is not known for making many one-shot movies in the horror genre, and that could well mean that this will be the first of many Five Nights at Freddy’s movies. The franchise has already expanded beyond several games to include a number of novels and story collections, and this could certainly be one of the reasons that Blumhouse has been keen to get involved. Having produced many successful and long-lasting movie franchises such as The Purge and Insidious, it would not be surprising to see Five Nights At Freddy’s become an annual Halloween event if the first movie becomes a box office hit. The film is set to start filming early in 2023. There is currently no word of when the movie will hit cinemas, but it could be possible that it will be seen as early as Halloween 2023.
