There will be more cases to solve with new episodes of Forensic Files II guaranteed to air on HLN through 2024. Per Variety, the Forensic Files revival series has been renewed as part of a new deal with CNN and original producer Medstar to develop new episodes through 2024. The renewal pact will begin with eight new half-hour episodes, starting with the story of a 24-year-old who was sexually assaulted and murdered after visiting a SoHo bar.

Following the end of the original run of Forensic Files in 2011, the show has remained very popular with fans of true crime. Because classic episodes still drew high viewership on HLN, the network revived the series as Forensic Files II in 2020. As original narrator Peter Thomas has since passed away, one key difference is with the narration, as Bill Camp now serves as Forensic Files II narrator. However, the idea was to otherwise keep the revival reminiscent of the original.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“We did not want to reinvent Forensic Files” says CNN’s Senior VP of Program Development, Nancy Duffy. “We really wanted to keep to the classic. We really just upgraded it in terms of video — we shoot in 4K — and some of the bells and whistles that TV now uses, but we do keep very strictly to the format.”

Because forensic science has advanced heavily over the past decade, another benefit in doing new episodes of Forensic Files would be the exploration of modern methods of solving crimes. There will be new strategies that were not seen used in the original series, such as one upcoming episode utilizing sonar technology normally used to explore the deep ocean.

“The technology just keeps advancing," Duffy said. “Sometimes, the solution to the crime is a device that’s not even created for crime-solving. That’s what makes the show so interesting.”

Paul Dowling created the original Forensic Files and thanks to the show’s continued airing on television, along with its availability on streaming services, it remains popular to this day with those interested in true crime. The show was originally broadcast on TLC in 1996 and wound up spanning 14 seasons with more than 400 episodes. Each episode will present a mystery that requires the help of forensic experts to solve. Most often, baffling murders were at the center of the cases, though there were sometimes other mysteries explored using forensic science, such as the Big Bayout Canot train wreck that happened in 1993.

Forensic Files II is set to premiere on July 22, 2022, on HLN. Episodes will also be made available on demand to pay TV subscribers at CNN.com, CNN apps, and cable operators. Ahead of the premiere, HLN will also air a “Mega Marathon” of Forensic Files starting on July 18 at 11 a.m. EST. Previous episodes of Forensic Files II will air on Sunday, July 24, and Sunday, July 31.
