Apple TV+ released its first sneak peek into the upcoming season of the larger-than-life science fiction epic on Wednesday. Foundation is adapted from the Hugo Award-winning titular series by renowned writer Isaac Asimov, and it’s been two years since the first season’s release. The breathtaking interstellar series unfolds over 1000 years through interconnected stories. It chronicles the imminent fall of the 12,000-year-old Galactic Empire prophesied by Hari Seldon’s multidisciplinary modeling system, psychohistory – a predictive science that can track the future behaviors of large groups of people.

By the end of season 1, the true purpose of the Foundation – an academic colony in exile sent to compile and safeguard knowledge for future generations – was revealed, and a new uncovered revelation threatened the integrity of the Empire. Just in case viewers forgot about the meandering events and overlapping timelines of season 1, the teaser provides a much-needed refresher while alluding to the impending crisis facing the Galactic Empire.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Foundation’s teaser begins with Gaal Dornick, portrayed by Lou Llobell, who narrates the two-minute video. “Though the journey was long, the mission of the Foundation had only just begun.” Throughout the teaser, it re-establishes our major players and season 1’s important arcs while introducing new characters into the colossal sci-fi saga. Season 2 further advances the connected plots surrounding the Foundation, The Genetic Dynasty, and the Galactic Empire as “a new crisis is right on their doorsteps.” War and conflict are alluded to within the teaser, shown through a sequence of visually compelling scenes.

Foundation Fulfills The Wishes of the Profound Sci-Fi Writer Isaac Asimov

The task of bringing Isaac Asimov’s brilliantly massive works to life is no easy feat. The initial Foundation trilogy incorporates multiple timelines, hundreds of worlds, and an interconnected plot to tie it all together. Film adaptations were attempted in the past, but none were able to materialize the acclaimed series for the big screen. David Goyer rose to the challenge of adapting the book series for television, beginning the process in 2017. And with the help of the Asimov estate, he has enriched the universe the writing titan created and brought the story into the present for a new generation. Robyn Asimov, who is the daughter of the prolific writer and serves as an executive producer on Foundation, has faith that Goyer will continue to make her father proud in the series adaptation.

Look to AppleTV+ later this year for season 2 of Foundation.

“David Goyer’s Foundation has surpassed all my expectations by bringing my father’s philosophy and ideas to the screen in ways he could never do while staying true to his work. I know my father would have been proud to see his iconic story come to life through the show’s visual beauty and the layered characters, understanding full well his words would need this cinematic translation. My father was deeply indebted to his fans, to their loyalty, and always hoped his work would pass through to following generations. The Foundation series is fulfilling his wish (and mine) by introducing his work to a vast array of new readers. Given the cerebral nature of the Foundation books, this series is a tour de force.”
