It may surprise many fans to know that George Lucas is not among the filmmakers to have yet been bestowed with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As someone who forever changed the course of cinema history with his work on major franchises like Star Wars and Indiana Jones, there’s really no question that the legendary filmmaker is deserving of the honor. It may have yet to happen, but if it helps speed up the process, The Godfather helmer Francis Ford Coppola has offered to give Lucas his spot.

On Monday, Coppola himself will be honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. Given his own impressive career, it may equally perplex some filmgoers that Coppola wasn’t yet on the famous walkway, either. Coppola spoke about the situation in a new interview with Variety and explained why it’s taken decades for this to happen, suggesting that it all basically down to the question of who would finance the induction.

Coppola also pointed out that George Lucas doesn’t have a star on the Walk of Fame, either. In Coppola’s opinion, this is especially egregious, and Coppola goes so far as to offer Lucas his own star.

Nevertheless, Coppola still feels honored to be a part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Given his lifetime spent in Hollywood, he feels “proud” to have his name shrined alongside so many of his contemporaries and having his own legacy honored alongside all of theirs.

This isn’t to say George Lucas has been completely uninvolved with the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2018, Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill was inducted with both Lucas and Harrison Ford on hand to offer touching tributes to their friend. Lucas was clearly very proud to see the Star Wars legend be given the honor.

“I’m very proud of Mark for getting this star,” Lucas said, per StarWars.com. “You’ve come a long way from that [Star Wars] casting session…to getting your star on Hollywood Boulevard.”

Ford added, “He had just the right blend of youthfulness and enthusiasm. He is, as he always was, a quiet, sincere, honest person…I’m happy for ya, pal.”

Famous for playing both Han Solo and Indiana Jones, Ford was inducted into the Walk of Fame in 2003. Late Star Wars legend Carrie Fisher posthumously receives her own star on the walkway this year.
