Mad Max’s Imperator Furiosa has many talents, among them “driving intuition” (according to her official Wiki), but Furiosa star Anya Taylor-Joy says that the stunts in the film are actually the first time she’s ever driven.
Appearing on The Graham Norton Show Wednesday, Taylor-Joy addressed a behind-the-scenes clip that she shared to her Instagram, which shows the actress nailing a 180 handbrake turn while training for the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road prequel.

Though you wouldn’t be able to tell based on the clip, The Menu star shared that it was actually her first time behind the wheel.

“What’s really crazy and slightly upsetting about that is that that’s my first time in a car. So I don’t have a license, I can’t parallel-park, I can’t go on the highway. I still don’t have one, but I can do that,” she joked, adding that the skill would come in handy “at some point.”
Taylor-Joy Says She’ll Get Her License, If She Doesn’t Scare Her Driving Instructor to Death
Netflix
Born in Miami, raised in Buenos Aires, and eventually moving to London, it makes sense that the Queen’s Gambit star didn’t have a chance to get her driver’s license—especially since she left school at 16 to pursue an acting career. That doesn’t mean it’s off the table entirely, but her limited experience has her a bit concerned about whatever poor driving instructor might be assigned to her.
“If a driving instructor gets in a car with me, all I know how to do is crazy stunt driving. I’m planning on getting my stunt driver’s certificate…so then, I’ll be able to do all of my driving in my films, which would be great. But I fear for the poor man or woman that is taking the test with me, because gentle, I am not,” the actress quipped to IndieWire, adding that she was definitely “spoiled” in terms of first cars.
She adds, “Eventually, I will be in a place long enough to get a driver’s license and then I’ll be really happy, because then I can play. But in terms of first cars, I think I’m quite spoiled in the fact that they were built by the Mad Max art department.”
Directed by George Miller and also starring Chris Hemsworth, Furiosa drifts into theaters May 24, 2024.
