Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have agreed to renew their first look deal for three more years. This will extend EAs stay at Sony through 2015. They have been with the studio since 1998. Escape Artists next project is Great Hope Springs, starring Meryl Streep, Steve Carell, and Tommy Lee Jones. Sony will release this romantic comedy about marriage with MGM in December of 2012. According to Variety, writer-director Mike Binder (The Upside of Anger) is the latest filmmaker ready to process the tragedy of 9/11, and he’s got Don Cheadle and Adam Sandler poised to join him. That duo is circling Reign O’er Me, a Binder-scripted drama that Sony Pictures Entertainment is angling to acquire and make next year with a budget under $20 million. DreamWorks Studios has picked up film rights to Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel The Help, which centers on the complicated relationships between the matrons of the South in 1962 and the maids and housekeepers who take care of their kids and homes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tate Taylor adapted the novel into a screenplay after acquiring the rights. He also will direct the film. “‘The Help’ is much more than a book; it has become a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of people everywhere,” DreamWorks co-president of production Holly Bario said....
Eddie Murphy’s latest comedy, Norbit won this weekend at the box office with $33.7 million, says Box Office Mojo. Eddie plays a trio of characters in the film. Hannibal Rising debuted in second place with $13.3 million. Gaspard Ulliel plays the young Hannibal; Gong Li also stars as a relative who takes him in after escaping a torturous childhood. Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore in Because I Said So came in the three spot bringing in $9 million; that brings the total to $25....
According to Variety, Oscar-nominated Juno star Ellen Page is set to topline Drag Me to Hell, a horror film that Sam Raimi will direct as his next film. Universal Pictures has acquired domestic and some international rights to the film, which begins shooting March 17 in L.A. Universal Pictures chairman Marc Shmuger and co-chairman David Linde made the deal with Ghost House Pictures partners Raimi and Rob Tapert. The film’s described as a morality tale about the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse....
