The 1980s were a landmark time for action films. With actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone leading the way, action movies shifted to responding to real-world events, or at least using them as settings for telling the stories. Movies like Predator, Commando, Top Gun, Rambo: First Blood, all featured gun-blazing, muscle-rippling, heroes. And by the end of the decade, the action genre took another turn while still using the basic formula of the films that preceded it, with the film Die Hard....

In October 2021, director Denis Villeneuve of Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049 fame proved to the world that it was, in fact, possible to successfully adapt Frank Herbert’s 1965 best-selling novel Dune. So good that audiences will see if Villeneuve’s Dune will win the Oscar for the coveted best picture category later this month at the 94th Academy Awards. Not only that but the second part of the epic story of Dune is set to be released on October 20th, 2023....

Over five decades later, the classic film Easy Rider is getting the remake treatment. Variety reports that the movie, released in 1969, has a remake that’s in early development from current rights-holders including Kodiak Pictures, Eric B. Fleischman of Defiant Studios, and the Jean Boulle Group. At this time, the story hasn’t yet been crafted as the producers are on the search for bold filmmakers to write and/or direct the film....

When American Horror Story: Asylum returns to FX next month, the new season will feature cast members from Season 1 such as Jessica Lange and Evan Peters portraying completely different characters. Series creator Ryan Murphy was recently on the red carpet of The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards and whispered that he had a new casting scoop. When he was asked what the spoiler was about, this was his response. It isn’t known which episode recent Emmy-winner Eric Stonestreet will appear in this season....

Community aired from 2009 to 2015, mainly on NBC. It centers around a group of community college students who become unlikely friends when forming a Spanish study group. Stars of the show include Atlanta’s Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, and Alison Brie. Despite the typical sitcom setup, Community is anything but that. Movie references are littered throughout the show, with whole episode homages to films and other shows like My Dinner with Andre, Goodfellas, and Glee....

Batwoman actress Javicia Leslie is no stranger to being a hero onscreen. Leslie plays Ryan Wilder, who protects Gotham City from the rotating gallery of baddies trying to blow up its citizens in the titular role of Batwoman. Why does anyone live in Gotham City? No one is sure, it’s infested with crime. But the city does have plenty of queer vigilantes ready to take a stand for the underprivileged, so maybe fans (and naysayers) of the series alike can learn something from some of the fictional world’s fiercest superheroes....

A war veteran (Jacob Keohane) tracks a Nazi Colonel in Condor’s Nest. He soon realizes he’s in for much more than expected when he comes across enemy headquarters. Alongside Keohane in the cast are Al Pagano, Corinne Britti, James Urbaniak, Jackson Rathbone, Jorge Garcia, Bruce Davison, Michael Ironside, and Arnold Vosloo. It’s written and directed by Phil Blattenberger. It will be available in theaters, on digital, and on demand on January 27, 2023, but ahead of that, we have a trailer premiere and official poster....

Explicit Ills is actor turned helmer, Mark Webber’s directorial debut. The film follows four inter-connecting stories revolving around love, drugs and poverty in Philadelphia. Babo, an asthma-ridden seven-year-old lives with his mother (Rosario Dawson) in the badlands of North Philly. His neighbor Demetri transforms himself into a well-read “smart” boy in order to get the girl. Michelle, a well-off art student is quick to fall into a drug-induced love affair with her dealer Jacob....

The terms “variant” and “multiverse” are overwhelming all of the latest discourse about the MCU and its upcoming films and television plans. The concepts were properly introduced in Disney+’s Loki, and judging by the storylines that have followed in Spider-Man: No Way Home and What if…?, both the multiverse and the idea of variants are becoming crucial to understanding this new era of the MCU. In addition, both concepts are guaranteed to be big plot points in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness....

Burn Notice star Jeffrey Donovan is finalizing a deal to star in Season 2 of FX’s hit series Fargo, with an offer also out to Parks and Recreation’s Nick Offerman. Nick Offerman currently isn’t in negotiations at this point, with The Wrap reporting that the actor has not yet made up his mind about joining the series. If he does sign on, he will portray Carl, although no character details were given....

Firestarter remakes an average Stephen King adaptation into a flat and lifeless film. A truncated plot follows the 1984 original’s storyline to a befuddling conclusion. I was frankly stunned by a significant change that makes no sense whatsoever. Firestarter has a second act that drags mercilessly. The characters bounce back from tragedy like ping pong balls. The pyrotechnic effects and gruesome make-up keep the horror elements in focus. It’s a slight reprieve from the plot’s choppy nature....
