The prevalence of the male gaze, as outlined in Laura Mulvey’s 1975 essay “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema,” focuses on the objectification of women onscreen. Most often, this manifests through making the female characters conventionally attractive, stripping them of their clothes, and placing them in peril for the benefit of the male characters, the male audience, and the male filmmaker. Naturally, the opposite ideal to this, the “female gaze,” has been introduced in tandem, though without a constitution to exactly outline what it means, often used to simply describe movies from female perspectives, be that a female filmmaker, female protagonist, or female audience....

Over the course of the past few decades, reality shows have become an inextricable part of human life. They’ve taken over the contemporary media landscape to the point where it’s nearly impossible to flick through television channels or browse your favorite streaming service without having to wade through a sea of reality content. It comes in a variety of different forms. Apple has just premiered the first trailer for the upcoming biopic, Milk, which stars Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, former San Francisco city official and the first openly-gay elected public official. Fox is developing a stateside version of Jennifer Saunders’ enduring British comedy Absolutely Fabulous. According to Variety, Christine Zander (Saturday Night Live) is set to write the script and will exec produce along with the BBC’s Ian Moffet and original series creator Saunders. Fox has given Sony a script order with hefty penalty attached. The new version of Absolutely Fabulous will be transplanted to L.A. but retain the basic template of the original, revolving around the friendship of two boozy, over-40 best friends who are desperate to stay hip and youthful and who carry on under the disapproving eye of Edina’s teenage daughter, Saffy....

Fans are clamoring for any glimpse they can get of Jackie Earle Haley’s new Freddy Krueger. And audience anticipation for this horror classic in the making is reaching a fever pitch. Writer/director/actor Christopher Guest has been delighting audiences for decades. His mockumentaries become instant classics upon each release. Guest began his career as an actor in the early 1970s, but he didn’t have a hit until he starred in the 1984 film This is Spinal Tap. His character, Tufnel, originated on The TV Show, a sketch comedy show that aired in 1978. The same year that This is Spinal Tap was released, Guest joined the cast of Saturday Night Live....

Columbia and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi are reconvening for The Given Day, an adaptation of an upcoming novel by Dennis Lehane. Columbia has picked up the novel, while Raimi is set to direct. According to Variety, Raimi is also aligned to reinvent the Jack Ryan franchise at Paramount. Books by the Dorchester, Mass.-born Lehane have proved popular for directors. Clint Eastwood directed Mystic River, and Ben Affleck made his directing debut on Gone Baby Gone....

It’s official: a popular animated program has found new life on cable. According to Variety, Comedy Central will air brand new episodes of Futurama starting next year. Primary voice actors Billy West, Katey Segal and John DiMaggio have all signed deals to return to the show. The cable network handed out a 26-episode order for the animated series, which originally aired on Fox from 1999 to 2003. The network had previously picked up the off-net rights to the 72 original episodes of the series and, after the popularity of the four new animated DVD’s that were released from the series, it was said the network and 20th Century Fox TV, who produced the series and the DVD’s, had been trying to come to an agreement on a new batch of episodes....

On the heels of their successful launch of Heroes at Comic-Con last year, Warner Brothers, the studio behind several new shows on TV this fall, came back strong to pitch Chuck. Executive Producers Josh Schwartz (The O.C.), Chris Fedak and McG were on hand to answer questions at a panel on Friday. After screening the pilot episode, the producers and several cast members of the show came out to answer questions....

Danny Comden has signed a deal with ABC Studios to write and star in Temps, a multicamera comedy set up at ABC. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Comden will write and star in the project, described as a modern-day Taxi set at a temp agency. The deepening recession is making the project topical and relatable as companies that lay off employees often resort to temp agencies to fill vacant positions, Comden said....

In recent weeks, Darren Aronofsky’s name has come up in regards to many high profile projects. The director’s latest drama Black Swan is garnering high praise, and that is making him a very sought after commodity in Hollywood. So far, we’ve seen his name attached to Superman, Preacher, The Tiger, and more recently, both Tales from the Gangster Squad and X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2. Deadline is reporting that Aronofsky is no longer eyeing Tales from the Gangster Squad, as 20th Century Fox has offered him a $5 million paycheck against 5% of the grosses to helm X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 instead....

Stranger Things star David Harbour makes a grizzly Santa Claus in the first look at festive action outing, Violent Night. We just might get a Dawson’s Creek reboot as original series star Mary-Margaret Humes says there’s a “strong possibility” that it’ll happen. Scheduled to debut today on the ATX TV YouTube Channel, Humes has participated with several other classic sitcom stars for the Mother Knows Best: A Look at ’90s TV Moms panel. A sneak peek of the panel featuring Humes was released by People ahead of the panel’s premiere....

Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment Group and Platinum Studios Inc. have commenced production on Dead of Night. This film is based on the best-selling Italian comic book series, “Dylan Dog,” created by Tiziano Sclavi and published by Italy’s Sergio Bonelli Editore. The comic book series has sold more than 56 million units worldwide and has been translated into 17 languages since its debut in 1986. Principal photography is taking place in New Orleans, Louisiana....
